How to Build a Humid Hide (Reptiles)
A humid hide is a small, enclosed micro-climate that stays damp (not soggy) so your reptile can self-regulate moisture - especially during shed.
Materials
- Opaque container with lid (tight fit, easy to clean)
- Moistened substrate (species-appropriate)
- Scissors/knife, reptile-safe disinfectant
Build Steps (≈5 minutes)
- Cut a doorway; smooth edges (about 1–1.5× body height/width).
- Fill 1/3–1/2 with damp substrate (not soggy).
- Place in the middle-to-cool end of the enclosure.
- Test & adjust ventilation so it stays damp without heavy condensation.
Targets
- Leopard gecko hide humidity: 70–80% (ambient 30–40%).
- Corn snake / many colubrids: offer a moss-lined humid hide as needed.
- Carpet python: ambient 40–60% plus access to a moss-lined hide.
Maintenance
- Re-moisten as needed; keep damp, not wet.
- Replace substrate routinely; disinfect the container during changes.
Species Notes
- Leopard geckos: keep on the cool side; avoid sphagnum/paper towels.
- Tarantulas: do not use humid hides—manage substrate moisture instead.
